Assessment Task No 3: News Feature Marking Template

The assignment will be marked on a five section grid like the Classmate Profile. The questions below give you an indication of what I am looking for when I allocate marks for each area.

Intro and angle

Does the intro catch the reader's attention?

Is it well written and easy to read?

Do the intro paras set an appropriate tone for the subject matter of the article?

Does it signal the angle/theme of the article?

Interview Material & Research

Are there 3 original interview sources?

Are the quotes substantial?

Are they used well to support the argument or contribute to the tone  of the article?

Are they introduced and attributed properly?

Is there evidence of other research?

Are facts marshalled clearly and represented accurately ?

Structure

Does the article flow easily?

Is there variation and rhythm in the writing?

Is there an appropriate mix of information, anecdote, quotes, and description? (depending on the type of feature the mix and emphasis will be different)

Are there contrasts and tensions? How are they handled?

Are connecting/transitional/bridging devices used to assist the flow between paragraphs and sections?

Is the ending strong?

Prose style and journalistic conventions

Is the writing fluid and engaging?

Is simple everyday language used?

Is the language concrete and specific rather than abstract and general?

Is it grammatical?

Does it read like a piece of journalism rather than an essay?

Overall effect

What is the overall effect?

Do all the elements work together to produce an article that is interesting, easy to read and brought to a satisfying conclusion?

Does it convince or leave the reader with images or information that they did not have before?
