Thursday 19 January The News Business

10.00-10.30: SBS Documentary Series Fine Line Episode Three Commercial Current Affairs

Episode Three enters the tabloid world of early evening commercial current affairs programs and explore the impact of the race for ratings on what viewers see and hear. The outgoing executive producer of the Nine Network’s A Current Affair speaks frankly about the pressure that commercialism puts on journalism, and a veteran of the Seven Network reveals the controversial choices they made to pull in an audience. Next, we showcase two fiery but entertaining interviews with Sydney radio king Alan Jones and Phil Martin, the head of SBS news and current affairs, as we explore how an individual’s world view or an organisation’s values impact the news agenda.

Interviewees: David Hurley and various other staff, A Current Affair; Jill Singer, formerly Seven Network; Alan Jones, Sydney 2GB; Phil Martin, SBS TV News and Current Affairs.
