Journalsim and modernism...What is this thing called journalism? How did it erupt as a form, and what propelled the culture of journalism to be distinct from literature?In this first program, we trace the ideas that formed the beginnings of journalism as we know it today; some say it was born from the Enlightenment, others say journalism itself was the cradle which rocked the Enlightenment.

Working The Fringes....Extensive coverage of the rebuilding of New Orleans is certainly something readers and viewers deserve, but they also deserve a form of journalism that has always been difficult for the press in the United States to produce: stories grounded in solid reporting about what is possible, rather than simply what is probable; stories that shatter the official zeitgeist; stories that help set the agenda.

Journals of opinion and the work of democracy..Interview with Victor Navasky, publisher and editorial director of The Nation. former editor of NYT Magazine and author of several books about US politics.

Can you trust a journalist?...Journalists must be prepared to take responsibility for the impact their reporting will have. Liberal theory of balance and fairness need to be updated if it is still to work in our media-savvy society.

General Media Resources

Cultures of Journalism

A terrific 13 part ABC Radio National series broadcast in 2004 which covers many of the issues raised in this course. Full transcripts are available and include comment from leading journalism studies academics.

The Columbia Journalism Review comes out of Columbia University one of the world’s most respected journalism schools. You will find numerous articles here on most of the topics being dealt with in the course.

Journalism.org has a range of great resources including a special briefings area that has an enormous archive on Journalism in time of war that includes a special sub section on embedding. Thier daily briefings is an indispensible round up of media news and links.

The Poynter and Pew Institutes also have detailed and comprehensive articles on journalism and archives of articles. Poynter has a huge international database on the churches and sex abuse.

Editor and Publisher is an industry newsletter that is a useful guide to current debates.

ABC Radio National’s Media Report is a weekly program that covers debates in the media and has a great set of transcript archives.
