For three decades this program has been a national leader in journalism education and many of Australia’s top journalists have been educated at UTS. Streams of study include print, radio, television, online media and investigative journalism.
Courses
We have an undergraduate program that includes combined degrees with law and international studies, and a strong postgraduate program for experienced journalists or people who already have a degree. We have growing honours and research degree programs, which include innovative and in depth journalism projects. Recently, we added a Graduate Certificate in Media Management.
Student Publications
From day one, our students begin producing stories and developing their portfolios through work experience and by researching and reporting for our own publications which include:
- an online magazine Reportage,
- two community newspapers, The Point and Southside News,
- specialist publications Book News and Festival News which is produced daily during the Sydney Writers’ Festival,
- Australia’s largest community radio station, 2SER.
Research
Our staff are all experienced media professionals, most of whom continue to practice as journalists. All staff also undertake academic research.
Our research strengths include:
- media, culture and identity,
- coverage of international issues,
- media history,
- journalism ethics,
- professional practice and investigative journalism.
Students and staff are involved in the work of the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism which hosts the annual PR2K conference and the George Munster forums. This year, the ACIJ published Adjunct Professor Peter Manning's Dog-Whistle Politics a study that examines representations of Arabic and Muslim people in Sydney newspapers over a two year period.
